Chapter 14

S itting on the concrete curb in the cul-de-sac, Jen waited for the rest of the group to arrive, lost in thought. The blockade, the arguments, Mike shooting the sick woman, and then Robin burning the body right there in the middle of the street. It was a lot to take in, and she was having a hard time dealing with her feelings about it all.

She wouldn’t admit it to anyone else, but when Mike had shot Claire, she’d felt a huge sense of relief. Witnessing the shooting had been a shock, but she knew that if she’d been in his shoes, she would have done the same exact thing. Killing Claire had been a necessary evil to protect the entire group. She did some quick mental math, judging that if she had gotten close enough to infect someone, Claire could have killed at least eight others in their group. While those who had not worn any protection would have been most at risk, it could have also infected those who had. It wasn’t lab-grade gear, after all, just some hastily thrown together outfits of items designed for household cleaning and not a pandemic virus.

Jen’s skin crawled as she recalled Claire’s coughing fits and how close the blood had landed next to some of her neighbors. After returning home, even though she hadn’t seen any specs of blood on herself, she still took no chances with decontamination. She had stripped out of her clothing on the back porch and raced inside to take one of the hottest showers she’d ever had. Once redressed, she searched the kitchen for the long grilling tongs and retrieved a clean set of gloves from under the sink, set both on the counter, and waited. When it was time to meet the others, she’d donned the gloves and used the tongs to carry her discarded clothes to the burn barrel in the cul-de-sac, where she’d dumped them in along with the tongs.

The others began filing into the cul-de-sac, taking a seat on the curb like Jen or on the street itself. Ted was the last to arrive. His freshly-washed hair dripped onto his clean t-shirt, and he plopped down unceremoniously next to Jen on the curb. Robin was the first to speak.

“Ted, move away from Jen and go sit over there across from Mike. We’ve got a new rule. Keep fifteen or twenty feet between yourself and anyone who isn’t a member of your household. After the incident earlier, I think we’ve all been enlightened as to the seriousness of what we’re dealing with.” Robin turned a serious glare toward Rich, and then shifted it in Jen’s direction. “Am I right? We’re all taking this seriously now? Nobody’s going to try to leave until this thing is over, right?”

Heat burned Jen’s cheeks, and she conceded the point. If she didn’t need her OCD meds so badly, she never would have tried to leave in the first place. She had no idea how she was
